Cardi B opened up about tension with other female rappers while promoting her new album Am I the Drama
As Cardi B prepares to release her highly anticipated sophomore album Am I the Drama? on September 19, she shares candid and unfiltered insights in an intimate interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, revealing the tensions she experiences within the rap industry.
“Sophomores vs. Seniors”: A Schoolyard Analogy with Bite
Channeling her signature bravado, Cardi didn’t hold back:
“For some reason, it’s something about me that these bitches can’t stand. They can’t f**k with me… Some bitches, I feel like they’re on this class right now, they’re sophomores, and I’m a senior.”
She continued with an unflinching metaphor: wanting to measure up to the “senior,” but not even reaching “junior” status yet. It’s a striking way to frame the tensions she believes she’s facing from peers in the female rap scene.
The Weight of Her “Light”
Beyond the schoolyard metaphors, Cardi revealed a deeper insight into her self-awareness:
“I just really think I was born with an anointed light. Sometimes the light is great, but it also disturbs people’s peace. It draws people to me, and it’s not always going to be good. That light might bother people… maybe it’s too bright, it’s too loud.”
This sense of visibility—while powerful—can also be isolating and provoke jealousy or dislike from others in the industry.
Setting the Tone for Am I the Drama?
The album’s title raises a compelling question: Is drama pursuing her—or is she the source of the drama? As Cardi expresses it:
“It’s like, ‘Damn, does drama chase me? Or am I the drama?’”
With this mysterious and provocative framing, Cardi seems to lean into the scrutiny and spectacle she’s both created and endured. You can see the full interview below:
